Anholt's desert

Recognition for Anholt’s desert

Realdania has identified Anholt’s desert as one of the most beautiful natural attractions of Denmark. That is why the natural resort is featured in the inspirational guide ‘Smutturen’ (‘The Quick Trip”) that lists 50 completely unique Danish natural resorts.

The 50 locations have been chosen among 580 that had applied to be part of the prestigious company.

The desert has scenery that can’t be experienced elsewhere in Denmark. The area consists of dune and heath terrain, and because Anholt is located so far out at sea, the supply of nutrient salts is very small. This is why you can find slow-growing and extremely rare plants, such as lichen in the desert.

The area is Northern Europe’s largest lichen heath, and contains many different sorts, such as reindeer lichen.
